
We rarely remember every conversation we’ve had. But most of us can remember a single sentence that changed our lives.
Maya Angelou once wrote, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” She captured a truth we all recognize. Long after the details fade, the feeling remains.
My wife, Marcia, has always been a natural encourager. Whether she’s thanking a restaurant server, complimenting a grocery store clerk, or striking up a conversation with someone she has just met, she has a remarkable way of making people feel seen. She notices the good in people—and she tells them.
I’ve always admired that about her because, if I’m honest, it didn’t come naturally to me. I appreciated people. I was grateful for them. I just didn’t always think to say it out loud.
Over time, her example began changing me. Now I make a point to offer a sincere thank you, share an encouraging word, or simply notice when someone looks like they could use a smile. Most of these interactions last only a few seconds, but I’ve learned those few seconds can matter more than we realize.
Then I realized something I’d missed.
I had spent years admiring the way Marcia encouraged other people. I appreciated it. I was grateful for it.
But I had never told her.
That realization stayed with me.
How many people quietly wonder if they’re appreciated simply because we never say the words? We assume they know. We assume our gratitude is obvious. We assume the people closest to us already understand how much they mean to us.
Sometimes they do. Sometimes they need to hear it.
That’s when I realized something else. Encouragement isn’t simply a personality trait. It’s a choice. And like most good choices, the more you practice it, the more natural it becomes.
I’ve learned that appreciation left unspoken is an opportunity missed. The people closest to us shouldn’t have to guess how much they matter. They deserve to hear it.
The older I get, the more convinced I become that most people don’t need grand gestures. They simply need to know they matter. A sincere compliment. A heartfelt thank you. A few encouraging words. They cost us almost nothing, yet they can become the brightest moment in someone else’s day.
We’ll probably never know how many lives have been changed by a kind word spoken at just the right moment. But we do know this: every one of us has the opportunity to leave someone feeling a little more seen, a little more appreciated, and a little more hopeful than they did just moments before.
You may never know which words another person carries with them for the rest of their life. Make sure yours are worth remembering.
The Ripple
Before tomorrow is over, encourage someone with a smile or a sincere word. Tell the cashier, the server, or someone helping you today how much you appreciated them. Then, before the day is over, tell someone you love what you’ve been meaning to say. Don’t assume they already know.
The words you choose today may become the words someone remembers for the rest of their life.
