BUILDING COMMUNITY BEYOND THE EXPECTED.
Mention the YMCA and chances are swimming, summer camp, youth sports and fitness first come to mind.
But at the YMCA of South Palm Beach County, there’s a lot happening beyond the expected.
Today’s Y is responding to community needs at virtually every stage of life — with programs that build leadership, address health challenges, bring families together and even help local businesses strengthen their teams.
Teens, for example, can develop leadership skills and serve their community through the Y’s Leaders Club or work with mentors through Teen Achievers. Younger children can explore engineering concepts through STEAM programming or participate in immersive Spanish learning.
Health programming extends well beyond traditional exercise classes, too. The Y offers community-health initiatives addressing arthritis, fall prevention, Parkinson’s disease and other chronic conditions. Adaptive programs are expanding opportunities as well, including an adaptive wave in a youth triathlon program this fall.
And sometimes strengthening community simply means bringing people together in unexpected ways.
On November 7, the Peter Blum Family YMCA of Boca Raton will host its 14th Annual Corporate Cup Challenge, turning traditional corporate team building into an Olympic-style “adult field day” with relay races, obstacle courses, tug-of-war and plenty of friendly competition. More importantly, proceeds benefit the Y’s Financial Assistance Program, helping make programs and services accessible to those who otherwise could not afford them.
That commitment to access may be one of the Y’s lesser-known stories. The YMCA of South Palm Beach County, with campuses in Boca Raton and Boynton Beach, provides approximately $1 million in scholarship assistance each year, made possible through community contributions.
So while there are still plenty of pools, basketballs and treadmills, the Y has become something much broader: a community resource continually evolving around how people live, learn, connect and thrive.
