There is something magical about seeing a familiar place as it once was.
A building we pass every day suddenly appears in an old photograph. A neighborhood looks completely different. A story we thought we knew reveals an unexpected chapter.
It makes us pause and wonder: What happened here before us?
At the Boca Raton Historical Society, we have the privilege of caring for an extraordinary collection of photographs, films, documents, and objects that help answer that question.
But preserving history is only part of our work. We get creative to find meaningful ways to share it.
That idea inspired our new series of eight short films exploring the people, places and moments that helped shape Boca Raton.
To bring these stories to life, we partnered with Prohibition Films. Working closely with our curatorial team, they helped transform archival materials into films that feel engaging, accessible, and visually compelling.
Each film is intentionally short, offering viewers an opportunity to discover something new about Boca Raton in just a minute.
The stories take us from the city’s earliest days to moments of innovation that reached far beyond our community. Viewers will encounter familiar landmarks, remarkable people, and a few wonderfully unexpected pieces of local history.
Some may recognize The Addison but not know the original purpose of the building or the story behind its celebrated architecture. Others may be surprised to learn about the Japanese immigrants who established the Yamato Colony or the African-themed wildlife attraction that once occupied the land we now know as Camino Gardens.
And while many people know that IBM had a presence in Boca Raton, they may not realize that a small team working here developed the IBM Personal Computer and helped transform the way people around the world worked, learned, and communicated.
These stories are very different, but together they reveal something about Boca Raton: Our history is filled with vision, imagination, reinvention, and more than a few surprises.
The films also allow us to open our archives in a new way. A photograph becomes more than an image stored carefully in a collection. It becomes a window into another time. A familiar landmark becomes part of a larger story. The past begins to feel closer.
There is also something powerful about making history available to all. Someone can watch a film from home, share it with a friend, use it in a classroom, or discover it while scrolling through social media.
A GLIMPSE INTO PEARL CITY
Discover a piece of Boca Raton’s history in this sneak peek from the Boca Raton Historical Society’s new film series.
Perhaps that brief introduction will inspire them to ask another question, visit The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum, or look more closely at the community around them.
That curiosity matters.
Boca Raton continues to grow and change. As it does, finding new ways to preserve and share our history becomes even more important. Understanding what came before strengthens our connection to the place we call home and to one another.
Whether someone has lived here for generations or arrived only recently, another story is always waiting to be discovered.
We hope these films encourage viewers to look at Boca Raton a little differently, and to realize that history is all around us.
